NEW! NUEVA!!

Newhouse

Newhouse is Kansas City’s first and oldest domestic violence shelter, serving survivors of domestic violence and their families since 1971. Started by two women, Newhouse is now much more than a shelter but rather offers an ecosystem of life-transforming services to support brave survivors and shatter the barriers that feed the cycle of abuse.

Domestic violence is more common than most realize and affects one in three women and one in four men. It knows no bounds affecting people of all ages, genders, cultures, income levels, and communities. It can be physical, emotional, mental, psychological, financial, and other kinds of abuse.

Abuse is often generational. If a boy witnesses abuse, he is 10x more likely to abuse; and, if a girl witnesses abuse, she is 6x more likely to be assaulted. Children are key to breaking the cycle of abuse so Newhouse has many programs focused on supporting children.

Newhouse offers an ecosystem of services for survivors all at no cost. Services include:

  • emergency shelter at its 92-bed facility

  • long-term housing support

  • children + adult therapy

  • strengths-based case management

  • legal advocacy

  • substance recovery

  • childcare

  • summer camp

  • educational support

  • job readiness, and much more.

If you or someone you know is facing abuse, call Newhouse at 816-471-5800 to reach a trained advocate 24/7.
